In today’s community, one of our topics will be the Elements. Many people see the elements as a “witchy” thing, but the system has been around since before modern Wicca. There is more than one system, too. We’ll stick to the Western tradition but you can also look into the system used in Feng Shui as an example.
The Elements can be applied to just about any system of thought. It’s a large filing cabinet with five drawers. Colors, seasons, phases of the moon, and astrological signs are just a few examples of where the Elements can be found. But first let’s start with a brief overview of the initiating concepts that created the Elements.
The Divine: Polarity & Modalities
The polarities, modalities, and elements are often found in Astrology. If you click on the picture, you can take an Astrology 101 class.
The Causal World: The Angelic Realm
The Angels are involved, and their darker counterparts are as well, in the creation of the elements. We’ll stick to Angels and primarily the Arch Angels.
The Arch Angels are the Divinely appointed Guardians of Earth and Humanity. They provide the blueprints for what the Elements will become (the Mental Body).
Raphael is the Guardian of Air and Cardinal East.
Michael is the Guardian of Fire and Cardinal South.
Gabriel is the Guardian of Water and Cardinal West.
Auriel (Uriel) is the Guardian of Earth and Cardinal North.
Metatron is the Guardian of Spirit and the Zodiac.
The Conceptual World and the Elemental Pyramid
Now we move to the conceptual world (the Auric Body) where the blueprints provided by the Causal World are given a template to begin “production” of the Elements.

Some call this the Witch’s Pyramid, but I prefer to name it the Elemental Pyramid for a more holistic approach.
The first movement is Spirit: The Macrocosm – To Become (to go)
The first intention is Air: Communication, Discernment, Creativity – to Know
The first will is Fire: Willpower, Passion, Drive – To Will
The first formation is Water: Emotions, Wisdom, Empowerment – To Dare
The first creation is Earth: Manifestation, Grounding, Connection – To Be Silent
The top of the pyramid is Spirit. The word ire in Latin means “to go” and this is the traditional meaning given by Aleister Crowley. I prefer something like cedo, which means “to become” or “to evolve.” Even actum or “actualizing” is more apropros in my understanding because self-actualizing is what we all hope to achieve as spiritual beings.
The Land of the Fae & the Devas
Now we move into the Etheric realm (the Etheric Body) where the templates are refined and the parts are gathered to create the Elements, and ultimately the world as we know it.
There are Elementals who are the essences of the Elements.
Air: Sylphs are ruled by the Monarch Paralda, the sweet messenger. Archangel Raphael governs these Elementals.
Fire: Salamanders are ruled by the Monarch Djinn, the fierce protector. Archangel Michael governs these Elementals.
Water: Undines are ruled by the Monarch Nixsa, the gentle healer. Archangel Gabriel governs these Elementals.
Earth: Gnomes are ruled by the Monarch Ghob, the strong provider. Archangel Auriel governs these Elementals.
There are devas with more specialized purposes such as the Plant People and Stone People.
The Periodic Table of the Elements and
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
The Periodic Table
I can say with some confidence that everyone reading this article is familiar with the image below.

Let’s take a look at the correspondences we can make with the Elements and the world around us.
Air: Gases, wind, breath; spring, sunrise, waxing moon
Fire: Atomic elements, flame, metabolism; summer, noontime, full moon
Water: Liquids, fluids, blood; autumn, sunset, waning moon
Earth: Solids, stones, bones; winter, midnight, new moon
Those are just a few of the associations that can be made.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Many have learned about Maslow’s Hiearchy of Needs in either high school or university. But how would the elements apply?

Earth is Physiological. Fire is Safety. Air is Social. Water is Esteem. Spirit is Self-Actualization.
The applications are endless and you are conceptualizing with the building blocks of nature. Pause now and then and make associations between the elements, your thoughts, the environment, and even your feelings. Fire as rage, a candle flame, the color red, etc.
The Elements belong to all of us. We are the Elements. To learn about them is to learn about yourself and the world around you.
